Abstract

The Jazz Bowl, perhaps Schreckengost’s best-known work, has become the signature piece of American Art Deco and an emblem of its era. But Schreckengost’s achievements cannot be adequately summarized with a single piece. Over the course of a life that has now spanned a full century, Viktor Schreckengost has produced paintings, ceramics and sculpture for museum exhibitions while simultaneously pursuing a career in industrial design, in which he created dinnerware, flashlights, printing presses, lawn mowers, electric fans, lighting fixtures and trucks. This lecture will provide an overview of Viktor’s career and design philosophy based on the speaker’s extensive conversations with the artist.

Biography: Henry Adams

Henry Adams was recently singled out by Art News as one of the foremost experts in the American field. The author of over two hundred publications in the American field, he was the author of the first book-length study of Viktor Schreckengost and organized the first major museum exhibition of his work. Most recently, he served as principal author of the catalogue documenting the hundred exhibitions that have been staged to celebrate Schreckengost’s hundredth birthday.
