Sale of Jazz Bowl June 8
Sotheby's takes in $192,000
We are pleased to report the sale of a Jazz Bowl at Sotheby's for $192,000 on June 8, 2005. Sotheby's advertised the bowl as coming "from Cowan’s second production series" and displaying "an elegantly flared rim and intensely saturated aqua blue glaze." Provenance was listed as "Robert H. Wolfe, Publisher, The Columbus Dispatch, ca. 1930s. Thence by descent."
The sale price doubled the estimated valuation of $75,000 - $100,000. While this does not break the current record for a Jazz Bowl sale ($254,400 at Sotheby's, December 2004), the high price came as a pleasant surprise to Chip Nowacek (Executive Director, Viktor Schreckengost Foundation) "because the bowl was a bit further down the production line and therefore not generally as desirable to collectors" than other Jazz Bowls that have sold at comparable prices.
